The erosion and deposition of sediments is a natural process resulting from streams flowing across the landscape. In some instances roads, homes, businesses etc. have been built in erosion-prone areas that naturally, over time, will see erosion become an issue on banks or shorelines. The elimination of stabilizing vegetation (e.g. trees, shrubs), whose deep roots have held the stream bank in place, is often the cause of erosion problems.
Conservation Sudbury receives requests every year from private property owners to provide financial assistance to deal with erosion occurring on their property. Unfortunately no funding assistance is available from the conservation authority, the municipality or the province for erosion control work on private property.
Some technical assistance can be provided during site visits; staff will supply information to property owners concerning current policy and procedures, including permits that may be required.
